For starters while the title of this new film comes from a Robert Ludlum book Gilory told Wells, "[it] will not use [that] story. It's a completely original screenplay." Gilroy also confirms something that Universal told us months ago. "This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel."

So that million dollar question: will Damon star? "No one's replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter...this is a stand-alone project," Gilroy said trying to explain the new universe of his film, which sounds like it exists in the same timeline as Jason Bourne's, but revolves around another Treadstone-like agent. Which is what we've been speculating all along. "The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal," Gilroy said "Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he's very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I'm building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy...the world we're making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne's return [down the road]."

"Everything you saw in the first three films actually happened, and everyone who got into them will be rewarded for paying attention. We're going to show you the bigger picture, the bigger canvas. When you see what we're going and see what we're doing it'll be pretty obvious....but Jason Bourne's activities in the first three films is the immediate trigger."

Hunt for 'Bourne Legacy' leads heats up
Gyllenhaal, Maguire, Hedlund in contention

The hunt for the new face of Universal's Bourne franchise is heating up.
Writer-director Tony Gilroy has been in town this week meeting with several actors vying to play the new lead character in "The Bourne Legacy," which is not Jason Bourne but a new assassin with a similar background. The list of thesps includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch and Kellan Lutz, sources close to the process tell Variety. Universal had no comment.

Insiders add that Gilroy has an idea of what kind of actor he wants but that U has also brought its picks to the table.

Insiders stress that no front-runner has emerged. Lesser-known actors could become a factor because Gilroy wants to screen-test all candidates -- which may be a stumbling block for some established thesps.

No other casting decisions are likely to be made until the lead is set, lending the search some urgency if production is to begin in the spring as planned.

The focus on a new character will allow for the possibility that Matt Damon could return to the franchise in some fashion.

With a number of high-profile studio pics recently settling their male leads -- including Warner Bros.' "Superman: Man of Steel," Fox's "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" and Universal's "Dark Tower" -- the top role in the next incarnation of the Bourne franchise has become the new must-get part among Hollywood's young leading men.

"The Bourne Identity" (2002), 2004's "The Bourne Supremacy" and 2007's "The Bourne Ultimatum" grossed almost $1 billion combined at the worldwide B.O. Pics, based on Robert Ludlum novels, revolved around a trained assassin with amnesia who tries to uncover his identity while evading other killers and government agents.

Gilroy wrote all three films; Doug Liman directed the first installment, Paul Greengrass the latter two.

Universal is targeting an August 2012 release for "Bourne Legacy."

The Bourne Legacy Adds Oscar Isaac as Number 3

Oscar Isaac has landed the role of "Number 3" in The Bourne Legacy, which is a spinoff of The Bourne Identity, directed by Tony Gilroy.

Oscar Isaac will play another brainwashed assassin in the film, which stars Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, Jason Bourne will not be featured in the film, and Jeremy Renner is set to play another assassin trained in the same program that Bourne was trained in.

No production date has been set.
